The Empire Lions

These magnificent life sized stone ornaments are seated reposefully on naturalistic bases continue the tradition of noble pre-eminence the lion has held in art and sculpture over the ages.

In ancient and modern times, Civilisation's glorious conquests and achievements and man's great deeds of heroism and selfless courage have been borne by the image of the lion.

In the style of Antonio Canova (1757 - 1822), the Empire Lions recall the celebrated colossal masterpieces for which he is famous, notably his life-sized lion sculptures of the Vatican, faithfully copied in the neo-classical revival in England following the Grand Tour, which peerlessly embody the virtues of patience, watchfulness, fortitude and nobility.

The success and downfall of nations and empires has been measured maxims based upon the lion's character and well might ambitions and ideals fail without their courageous standard.

The Lion statues were sculptured in the United Kingdom during 2006/2007. They are manufactured and hand-aged in Somerset (UK) and are available on or off the plinths in reconstituted bath stone. Also available as special commissions in hand patinated bronze or in cast bronze.
