The Process

While the company employs a select group of skilled artists, sculptors and craftsmen to fashion and age each item, Cavendish Stone has established a particularly close working relationship with Carn Standing, based in Scotland. Standing has worked with Cavendish Stone for 15 years on these and other projects and his unrivalled ability to combine vision and and a keen imagination with detailed sketches and compositions is basis of this close collaboration.

Standing compiles an initial sketch of the suggested subject. He subsequently fashions the item on an armature (metal framework skeleton, see video) in clay which is then sent to Bristol where mould makers shape the carving in resin to produce the final article in reconstituted stone. The sculpture is then aged by hand employing a special process to enhance the final appearance and finish.
